Microsoft Edge Is Giving Users an Easy Way to Turn Copilot Mode Off
Microsoft is testing a new menu switch in Edge Canary that makes it clear Copilot mode is optional and easy to exit.
Microsoft is testing a new way for users to switch between Copilot mode and normal browsing in Edge. The change is now visible in Edge Canary, where a new menu toggle lets users turn Copilot mode on or off without digging through Settings.
Copilot mode is a browsing mode in Edge that changes how the browser behaves. When it is turned on, Edge places Copilot more prominently across the interface. New tabs follow a Copilot-focused layout, and AI features receive more visual priority during browsing.
When Copilot mode is turned off, Edge returns to its regular layout and behavior. Copilot prompts no longer take priority, and browsing works the same way it did before the mode was enabled.
This makes Copilot mode feel more like a separate browsing mode than a background feature.
A new Copilot mode toggle in the menu
Until now, managing Copilot mode required navigating through Settings. With this change, Edge adds a Copilot mode toggle directly to the three-dot menu.

The switch appears at the top of the menu after enabling a Canary flag called “Edge Copilot Mode More Menu Toggle”. From there, users can turn Copilot mode off instantly and return to normal browsing.

Microsoft is testing multiple placements for this toggle, including a version above the Settings entry. At the moment, the top-of-menu version appears to be the most active and working. The alternate placement may arrive in later Canary versions.
Turning Copilot mode off triggers a reminder
After Copilot mode is turned off, Edge may show a reminder when the user opens a new tab.
The prompt invites users to “Turn Microsoft Edge into your AI browser powered by GPT-5.” It also offers a clear Not now button. This confirms that Copilot mode is not forced and can be ignored without affecting normal browsing.

The flow suggests Microsoft wants users to be aware of Copilot mode without locking them into it.
The menu toggle is not the only way to control Copilot mode in Edge.
Users who want more detailed control can visit Settings > AI innovations, where Edge groups Copilot-related options in one place. From here, users can manage Copilot mode itself, control how the Copilot new tab page behaves, and review related features such as Journeys and Actions.

This section also includes Copilot mode preferences. It lets users manage how the browser behaves while Copilot mode is active. Compared to the quick menu switch, these settings offer a deeper way to customize the Copilot experience.
