OpenAI Said to Be Developing Its Own GitHub-Style Code Platform

According to Reuters, OpenAI reportedly has a code-hosting platform in the works, designed to compete with GitHub. The project remains early, but OpenAI has already discussed offering it to existing customers, which signals a push beyond models and into the tooling developers use every day.

GitHub instability helps explain the timing

The report lands after months of GitHub service disruptions that slowed down teams, broke CI pipelines, and disrupted cloud-based dev environments.

Incidents reportedly included network and packet-loss problems that interfered with dependencies used to build devcontainer images, along with knock-on effects for GitHub Actions and even global mobile notifications. More disruptions followed in February, including a configuration issue that affected scaling across regions and triggered timeouts across Copilot features like chat, coding agents, and code review.

By March, more reports pointed to day-to-day friction, including cases where certain AI models vanished from IDE menus due to enterprise policy changes.

This creates friction with Microsoft

A competing platform would put OpenAI on a more direct collision path with Microsoft, which owns GitHub and also supports OpenAI through its cloud infrastructure and broader partnership.

The situation looks even more complicated because Microsoft has signaled that it wants to reduce reliance on any single AI provider over time. Meanwhile, OpenAI has expanded its funding and partnerships, which has forced public clarification around how the Microsoft relationship evolves going forward.

OpenAI keeps expanding, even when it stirs controversy

The same expansion pattern has shown up elsewhere. OpenAI has pushed into new markets quickly, even when the move creates partner tension or public backlash.

That includes a recent defense-related deal that triggered strong criticism online, which prompted Sam Altman to address the controversy directly.

Nothing suggests an imminent launch, and the platform still sits in early development. Still, the direction matters: if OpenAI ships a serious GitHub alternative, it could bundle hosting, CI, and AI-native coding workflows into one stack, and that would reshape how developers pick tools, not just which model they use.
